Advanced course in nature photography
In this 8-lesson course you will head out with your own camera and learn to observe, prepare and photograph better in nature. The equipment is not the focus, but your preparation, insight and patience. The course builds logically from basic rules (rule of thirds, symmetry) to more advanced techniques such as layering and minimalism. Between lessons, you will work on assignments.
Course level:
This course is for you if you already master the semi-automatic modes (A or Tv/S) and know how to over- or underexpose. We cover technique briefly; the focus is on content, practice and enjoyment.
You will learn:
- Working with natural light (making optimal use of morning and evening light, backlight and diffuse light).
- Composition in the landscape: creating depth with foreground, middle ground and background.
- Patience and timing: learning to anticipate movement (animals) and changing conditions such as the weather.
Structure of the course:
We start with an in-depth look at a specific theme, for example light or landscape structure. We then analyse the participants’ work. Practical assignments play a major role, both during and between lessons.
We build from landscape basics towards more refined techniques (minimalist nature images, abstraction, detail studies and atmospheric photography). You will develop a small series around a nature theme. The result is a consistent set of nature photographs with more depth, atmosphere and technical control.
In addition to theory and discussion lessons, two 4-hour excursion days are scheduled. During these days we head into nature together and you put what you have learnt directly into practice. You will receive practical tips on subject choice, light, timing and image construction. In the lessons afterwards, we will view and discuss a selection of your work.
What you need:
- A DSLR or mirrorless camera with interchangeable lenses.
- A telephoto lens (for animals) and a macro or zoom lens is recommended. Close-up lenses are also possible.
- Tripod (required).
Course dates:
Lesson 1: Thursday 2 April
Lesson 2: Thursday 9 April
Lessons 3 & 4: Thursday 7 May
Lesson 5: Thursday 21 May
Lessons 6 & 7: Thursday 28 May – practical evening (19.00 to 23.00)

The teacher about this course: “Nature photography forces you to slow down. You learn to look at light, weather, seasons and small details. I enjoy helping students move beyond the ‘pretty picture’ and truly capture atmosphere. Working outdoors gives energy, and every lesson is different because of the changing light and landscape. That combination of technique, experience and calm makes this course particularly inspiring for me to teach.”
