Special mural on the CKE building

Making visible what war does to people. A message of sorrow, but also a message of hope, delivered by creative refugees from Ukraine. This is the idea behind the mural that was painted on the CKE building in late October 2022. The mural was fully visible from the start of Dutch Design Week.

Conveying a message

The mural was created by Ukrainian refugees, all young women. They translate their mixed feelings of powerlessness, horror and hope into words and images. Refugee Alina wrote a poem about the war, which appears on the wall alongside the depiction of a woman and child, a peace dove and traditional Ukrainian motifs. Not only did the refugees design the mural, they also helped execute it. Through their work, they call attention to the situation in their homeland.

The project was supervised by professional graffiti artist from Eindhoven, Niels Bakkerus. “I think it’s fantastic to help young, creative people express their message in this way.” A remarkable detail: none of the participants had experience with spray cans. Bakkerus: “It’s amazing to see how quickly they picked it up.”

Bakkerus carried out the project commissioned by CKE. For this project, CKE collaborated with Buurt in Bloei of Wij Eindhoven, Springplank and Van der Meijs Onderhoud. The latter, through its social programme Meijsindebuurt, together with Driessenverf, provided all the necessary materials.
