Freedom Vibes 040
On 18 September 2024, we celebrated 80 years of freedom in the Netherlands. On that date in 1944, Eindhoven was liberated from German occupation by British and American troops. Since then, the people of Eindhoven have commemorated this liberation with the collection of the Liberation Flame from Bayeux in France, a veterans’ parade, and the ceremonial lighting of the Lichtjesroute.

A new-style parade for 18 September
Looking to the future, the Stichting 18 September (18 September Foundation) launched a new foundation: Freedom Vibes 040. Under this name, the celebration of freedom in Eindhoven is taking on new energy – with a special focus on young people, neighbourhoods, and the Liberation Flame.
Looking back
The flame has been lit – and our hearts are still glowing with the warmth of Eindhoven’s freedom celebration. It was wonderful to see how deeply the theme of freedom resonates with people and brings them together. Across six districts in Eindhoven, residents gathered, shared meals, and talked about what freedom means to them. Young and old. Long-time locals and new Eindhoveners.
The sense of connection was also reflected in the energy and involvement of our many local partners: music associations, guilds, scouting groups, residents’ organisations, care providers – all helped make the commemorations and celebrations a success. And they did so together with our brilliant neighbourhood coordinators, supported by an unexpectedly large turnout from residents. It moved us deeply. We’ve already shared some of the many goosebump moments, but there were so many more – we could go on sharing them. The flame has been lit, and passed on. We’ll keep enjoying its warmth together.
A new way to celebrate
CKE is working closely with the foundation to help shape these new-style celebrations across the city districts. It’s a beautiful and honourable task, where we use our presence in neighbourhoods to engage and excite people about the celebration. From our network, we also provided several neighbourhood coordinators and project director Eva Stam, who helped develop and shape the new concept.
The travelling Liberation Flame
On 18 September, each of the six Eindhoven districts hosted small-scale celebrations focused on the theme of freedom. The Liberation Flame from Bayeux travelled from Stadhuisplein to each of these districts. Escorted by military vehicles, the flame was delivered to a central location in each district. There, communities came together to eat, share stories, and enjoy live performances. All events were organised in close collaboration with local residents and community groups – including guilds, scouting clubs, music associations, and various neighbourhood initiatives.
Pre-events and district celebrations
In the weeks leading up to 18 September, each district hosted a pre-event programme. These ranged from creative workshops to neighbourhood dialogues – all free to join. Everyone was warmly invited to attend their local celebration on 18 September.
