Colourful Vlokhoven

The long, wide wall along the playground in Eindhoven’s Vlokhoven neighbourhood was in need of some colour – and graffiti artist Gart Smits was happy to help. Together with Year 6 pupils from Cornelis Jetses Primary School, he got to work. They brainstormed, sketched and designed with great enthusiasm. Their ideas were eventually brought to life as a vibrant graffiti mural.

Main theme: ‘Multiculti’

The brainstorming session between Gart and the children resulted in the central theme ‘multiculti’ – multiculturalism. This theme mainly manifested itself in drawings featuring globes, flags, and fists (for a fist bump!) in a variety of skin tones. One of the children also designed an image made up of different faces.

After the design session with Gart, the children got the chance to pick up spray cans themselves in a hands-on graffiti workshop led by artist Jasper van Seggelen.

Extra attention

Gart Smits brought all of the children’s ideas together in his final mural design. The result: a flowing orange ribbon sweeping gracefully across the different elements. The finished artwork is stunning – and in spring, it received special attention during a community event in Vlokhoven.

The Colourful Vlokhoven project was created by Gart Smits and made possible by CKE, Buurtfonds Woonbedrijf, Steunpunt Vlokhoven, Lumens, Municipality of Eindhoven, Jasper van Seggelen, local residents of Vlokhoven, and the pupils of Cornelis Jetses Primary School.
