Next steps in theater: creating a play

Over the course of 18 weeks, you’ll create a performance together with a director. We’ll draw inspiration from a shared source and build toward a final performance.

At the start of the course, we decide whether to work from a set script, scenes we’ve created ourselves, or a combination of both. First, we get to know each other through various improvisation exercises. We also determine how we’ll create the piece. The next step is the development phase, during which we work on all the different scenes. We develop characters and engage in targeted exercises and improvisations with the director. During the performance phase, you’ll rehearse extensively, and the director will help bring out the best in you. The director ensures quality, makes sure everyone contributes meaningfully, and that the performance is rock-solid.

With music, set design, lighting, costumes, and props, everything comes together. What exactly will the performance be? The possibilities are endless, and we’ll decide together. Will the group go for their own take on a familiar concept, like a series such as The Office or Rundfunk? Will it be a modern adaptation of a play by Chekhov or Shakespeare? Will we start with a book, a piece of music, or a newspaper article? We’ll see—the possibilities are endless.
